ART021 SHANGHAI ART FAIR
November 7-10, 2024
For Art021 Shanghai, ZieherSmith presented a two artist presentation featuring two emerging artists: Louise Jones (aka Ouizi) and Jonathan Edelhuber and their dual sentiments on contemporary society by way of art historical reinterpretation.
Coupling Jones (a California native of Chinese descent and living in Detroit, Michigan) and Edelhuber (an Arkansas native living in Clarksville, Tennessee), the gallery pulls focus on two individual voices reworking classic still life tropes in distinctly different ways but with subtly similar conceptual approaches.
Jones views her "simple" floral subjects with the same metaphysical reverence as Edelhuber worships the artists whose volumes adorn his book-scapes and memento mori. Edelhuber's upcycling of inspirations as subject matter lends to the serial nature of his studio practice, like a monastic chant from the middle-American hills. Jones's urban industry, whether painting murals nationwide or at home in her storefront Detroit studio signals a restless, spry approach of a troubadour, lyrical and hopeful in sickness and health, and always optimistic, since sometimes miracles sprout up in the weirdest places
The 12th edition of ART021 Contemporary Art Fair took place at Shanghai Exhibition Center, Shanghai, China
